Lighting Tests | A Self Portrait

David Burke Self Portrait
The winter months always put me in a funk. I decided, this year, I wasn’t going to allow that to happen. In order to keep my brain/creativity working, I have been shooting more personal work. A lot with my iPhone (which is a great discipline I have created) but more importantly with my big boy camera and equipment.

Equipment specifications aside, I am really into using off camera lighting. The more I use it, the more I want to incorporate it in all that I shoot (that is non-documentary).

As of lately, I have been creating some Self Portraits so that I can be on both sides of the camera. This has helped me understand the relationship between Camera/Lights/Subject so much better. I highly recommend trying it.

Now, of course I am my own worst critic, so a TON of the shots are throw aways. Every once in a while I come across one that I like. The photo above happens to be one that I like. It is such a different photograph for me. If you know me personally, you know that I laugh a lot and am often smiling. I wanted to see what a more stoic look would be like on me.

So at this point I am way out of my comfort zone goes, as pictures of me, but I like it. Shooting this way really brings on the challenges and I know will continue to make me a better photographer.
